More specifically, it is a software framework and middleware that hosts Java based web applications. It is the flagship product within IBM's WebSphere software suite. It was initially created by Donald Ferguson, who later became CTO of Software for Dell and the first version was launched in 1998.

Supported WebSphere versions: The Actions work with WebSphere WAS version 6.1 and upwards.
All Actions work with Standalone WebSphere Servers as well as with network deployment setups using a WebSphere Deployment Manager.
Starting with version 1.5.0 of the Action Pack, auto-discovery of CA Continuous Delivery Automation Deployment Targets is supported (CA Continuous Delivery Automation V12.2 required)
The Actions are implemented using the "wsadmin" tool provided with a WebSphere Server or WebSphere Client installation.
